Bangkok arguably features the best variety of accommodation options of any Asian city, with accommodation catering for all budgets spread right throughout the city. Its mass of accommodation options is part of what makes Thailand such an attractive destination for tourists. Choose from backpackers’ hostels and cheap lodgings to self contained apartments and five-star luxury hotels.
The best area for budget accommodation is Banglamphu and the area around Khao San Road although it does tend to get rather noisy, especially at night when masses of tourists and locals get together to party. Hundreds of guesthouses and hostels line the roads around this area, and many do not take advance bookings. The nearby Phra Athit area contains several decent guesthouses in a slightly quieter atmosphere.
If you want to escape the backpacker scene completely, it is still possible to find a decent cheap Bangkok hotel. The Rex Hotel on Sukhumvit Road offers three-star rooms at discount prices, while the Astera Sathorn near Sathorn Bridge features slightly more expensive rooms, with laundry, internet and fitness centre on site. Hotel deals can often be made online when booking or at time of arrival.
The city’s business district is concentrated around Siam Square and Sukhumvit. Here can be found a great selection of world class hotels, such as the Siam Hotel, boasting a spa, fitness centre, pool and restaurants. Other hotels in the area include the Asia Hotel Bangkok and the Pathumwan Princess Bangkok, both located conveniently close to some of the city’s best shopping arcades.
Novotel Suvarnabhumi (Bangkok Airport Hotel) is the airport’s official hotel and boasts 612 beautifully modern rooms. By Thai standards it is expensive, but you get much more for your money than you do in the West. Other hotels near the airport include the slightly cheaper Queen’s Garden Resort, Thong Ta Resort and Grand Inn Come Hotel. If you’d like to rent an apartment, then there are numerous companies just waiting to help you do just that, and many of them also throw a car in with the deal. Prices and facilities vary greatly.
